Open letter to Education Workers

I totally respect teachers.
I've been watching Twitter this week seeing the wonderful posts using #voluntary. It is amazing what educators do for students on their own time or at their own expense.
But I also respect other education workers. They are Support Staff, like me.
They are the office staff who take care of bleeding noses and scrapes while doing their office work. They are the education assistants and early childhood educators who work with students at all grades including special needs students and kindergarten students.
They are the custodians who keep the school safe and clean.
They are the technical staff who work in witn students in libraries and support our computer systems and networks.
They are admin staff who take care of payroll, bussing, student admissions, finances.
They are school psychologists and social workers.
They are ESL teachers and caregivers.
I can't name all of them, but they are in every school or Board office.
We don't hear much about them.
Dalton McGuinty and Laurel Broten talk about "the teacher fight". Have they forgotten about Support Staff or is it convenient to leave them out?
My union President, Ken Coran of OSSTF, talks about Education Workers. The media seems to think that means teachers.
Support Staff workers are also affected by Bill 115. Our rights have been trampled and our contracts stripped. We have had a contract imposed on us, based on negotiations made with a teacher union.
Support Staff make an average of $38,000.00 a year, if they are working full time.
Like teachers, they are an integral part of the education team.
And are also worth every penny!

  1. Bravo sister, well said. This teacher, for one, knows the full value of the support staff ha work in our schools. Together we are all a tremendous education team.

  2. I have only recently began working in elementary school libraries as a supply library technician. The tremendous work being performed by all members of the educational system family is phenomenal and has become tragically undervalued in our society. When did our children's future and those responsible for its nourishment fade from the priority list?

These shocking steps taken by the Liberal government (unbelievable that I am associating these tactics with a Liberal government!) should be seen by all people of Ontario as a dangerous and slippery slope.

Negotiation is a skill. Bullying is a behaviour.
